Video: Watch this demo

Description: This demonstration illustrates centripetal force.
For equilibrium, the centripetal force must equal the weight of the mass attached to the string.

Equipment:

  • Centripetal force apparatus
  • Set of weights

Demonstration Procedure:

  1. Attach a mass to the string and spin the globe around your head. Note the speed at which you spin and the radius of the circle.
  2. Take off the mass and attach a different mass. Note the changes that have to take place to maintain equilibrium.
  3. The tension in the string is about equal, so for there to be equilibrium the centripetal force must equal the weight of the mass.
