1D50.20-Centripetal Force Apparatus
Video: Watch this demo
Description: This demonstration illustrates centripetal force.
For equilibrium, the centripetal force must equal the weight of the mass attached to the string.
Equipment:
- Centripetal force apparatus
- Set of weights
Demonstration Procedure:
- Attach a mass to the string and spin the globe around your head. Note the speed at which you spin and the radius of the circle.
- Take off the mass and attach a different mass. Note the changes that have to take place to maintain equilibrium.
- The tension in the string is about equal, so for there to be equilibrium the centripetal force must equal the weight of the mass.
