Description: This illustrates different material’s rate of conduction.

Equipment:

  • Rate of conduction apparatus
  • 7 Ping Pong balls
  • Several contained candles
  • Metal ring stand
  • Bunsen Burner
  • Matches

Setup Procedure:

  1. Setup as early as possible, since this takes a while.
  2. Light a few contained candles.
  3. When the wax is melted, take a ping pong ball, press it against one of the rods, and pour the wax over the joint.
  4. Once enough wax is on to securely hold the ping pong ball in place, repeat for the rest of the balls.
  5. From this point forward, be delicate when moving the apparatus since the ping pong balls may fall off.
  6. Place the apparatus on the metal ring stand.
  7. Position the Bunsen burner directly under the apparatus and connect to the gas valve.
  8. When the professor is done, use caution as the apparatus may still be hot.

Demonstration Procedure:

  1. Explain to students that each rod is a different material.
  2. Turn on the gas and light the Bunsen burner.
  3. Wait for the apparatus to heat up. Note that the ping pong balls which fall off quicker indicate that the material has a higher rate of conduction.
  4. When finished, turn off the Bunsen burner.
