4B30.10-Rate of conduction
Video: Watch this demo
Description: This illustrates different material’s rate of conduction.
Equipment:
- Rate of conduction apparatus
- 7 Ping Pong balls
- Several contained candles
- Metal ring stand
- Bunsen Burner
- Matches
Setup Procedure:
- Setup as early as possible, since this takes a while.
- Light a few contained candles.
- When the wax is melted, take a ping pong ball, press it against one of the rods, and pour the wax over the joint.
- Once enough wax is on to securely hold the ping pong ball in place, repeat for the rest of the balls.
- From this point forward, be delicate when moving the apparatus since the ping pong balls may fall off.
- Place the apparatus on the metal ring stand.
- Position the Bunsen burner directly under the apparatus and connect to the gas valve.
- When the professor is done, use caution as the apparatus may still be hot.
Demonstration Procedure:
- Explain to students that each rod is a different material.
- Turn on the gas and light the Bunsen burner.
- Wait for the apparatus to heat up. Note that the ping pong balls which fall off quicker indicate that the material has a higher rate of conduction.
- When finished, turn off the Bunsen burner.
Open Flame
Keep away from flammable materials.
