My first week here in Ireland has been amazing! I’ve already experienced so much and had such a great opportunity to reflect on things learned back at home. While walking the cobblestone streets in Dublin and almost rolling my ankle on multiple occasions I’ve realized how inaccessible and inconvenient this amazing city can be. Every pub and store has a step up into it, isolating any citizen with a mobility disability.
Although this is definitely an important setback that the city faces in regards to disability inclusion, I think the moral and character of the city makes up for it. Everyone that I have met in Dublin so far has been so kind, no only in answering my questions, but adding genuine thought into their responses. It seems clear that although there are setbacks in inclusion, it’s not due to a lack of character. The character of the city seems to embrace all counterparts of its population make-up, whether that be a store owner, taxi driver, a person with disabilities or a tourist like me!
