Coincidentally we ran into some of the panellists at a restaurant. We introduced ourselves as attendees of the conference and told the woman from the Netherlands (also known as the lady with the Mohawk) how impressed we were with everything she had to share. However, I grew more impressed with a woman from Norway she was with, Liv Skree. We talked about the topic of abortion that was covered at the end of the conference on Monday because I was quite confused by what was being said. Because of her Norwegian accent there was a little bit of a language barrier, but she broke it down for me in her own way. She said that if people viewed a fetus with a disability the same way they viewed a fetus that is a female, their opinions would change. She said that most of Europe thinks it is okay to abort your baby if it is detected as having an intellectual disability before being born, the same way China thinks it is okay to abort your baby if it is a girl. In Liv’s words, by Europe making it okay to abort a baby with an intellectual disability, it means they are trying to rid of this population (intellectually disabled), the same way China is trying to decrease their female population. Although her and I both agreed that you cannot just try wipe out a population. When Lilv explained it to me like this I was shocked. Abortion debates have always been intriguing to me and when she compared it to China it opened my eyes to Europe’s stand point on abortion.
