Conference Themes

This conference was the first of its kind that I have been fortunate enough to attend.  Hearing how different countries handle different situations regarding disability was truly eye-opening. One thing that really surprised me was realizing that the United States isn’t as great with disabilities as we make it out to be.  Now, this isn’t saying that other countries are perfect, there are definitely some better and some worse than us when it comes to disabilities and supports, but most of what we hear about in the US is what should be happening, not what is happening.  I also found that to be an overwhelming theme throughout the conference. No matter what topic was talked about it was always stated that “more action needs to be taking place”.  What I was disappointed by was that there was no conversation on how we can fix these problems in a realistic way.  Every speaker either talked about their experiences, what it’s like in their country, and what’s wrong with the current system in place, but almost no one mentioned how to change the injustices.  Yeah, some hypothetical ideas were thrown out there, but nothing solid.  I would have liked to see this conference choose 2 strong topics of concern in countries and develop action plans to bring back to these countries to implement change.  When theres that many people in a room with so many different backgrounds there are bound to be so many realistic plans created.
