Walking Tour of Galway!

Today, we had a guided walking tour of Galway led by our coordinator, Jim. As we wandered through the charming streets, we were surrounded by the city’s rich “Olde Worlde” medieval character. Galway, often referred to as Ireland’s Cultural Heart, is known for its lively atmosphere, frequent festivals, and vibrant artistic presence. Just before we boarded public transportation, I noticed an advertisement for Special Olympics Ireland, the organization we met with earlier on Thursday the 19th in Dublin, Ireland. It was heartwarming to see that their work is being advertised widely across the country.

During the tour, we stopped at a monument dedicated to John F. Kennedy. The stone inscription reads: “John Fitzgerald Kennedy President of the United States of America became Freeman of Galway borough at this place on 29th June 1963.” This honorary title, Freeman of Galway, is given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the city or deserve special recognition. JFK received this distinction during his 1963 visit to Ireland, right here in Eyre Square, where he also gave a speech to a large crowd. It was really powerful to stand where such a historic moment took place.

Unfortunately, the Menlo Park Apartments where we’re staying are not accessible. Each unit requires climbing an outdoor staircase just to reach the front door, and more stairs inside to access bedrooms. It’s unfortunate to see such limited accessibility. Additionally, many public bathrooms in the area require payment to use, which is a barrier for people without immediate access to money.
