Today was such an eventful day for our disability site visits in Galway, Ireland. We started off the day at the Galway Autism Partnership or GAP and learned about how this charity organization supports families and individuals in Galway who are impacted by autism. Going into this meeting, I was reminded of the film we watched from the perspective of an individual with autism, “The Reason I Jump.” This film was quite insightful and changed my perspective on how autistic people interact with the world. However, as the film pointed out, communicating needs with loved ones and getting the necessary support in place for autistic people is challenging. Amrit’s story in the film showcased this through the difficulties her mother had with misinterpreting her and Jestina’s parents pushing their community to create programs for children with disability. I took away from this film the idea of how lack of accessibility can make autism, or any disability, very isolating and that the families of autistic individuals need support systems to better aid their children or loved ones with autism. I was fascinated to discover that GAP has programs to help parents and families care for their autistic loved one including an online weekly meeting to discuss navigating and supporting an autistic individual, day programs to provide the families time to complete other activities while their loved one is being supported in a calm, peaceful, and safe environment, and having massage and yoga session to help everyone in the family destress. The partnership’s emphasis on familial support along with individual support was nice to hear, as Fionnathan is our second site visit iterated because circles of support stem from each person in the support system, not just one. It was also heartwarming to hear stories of how families at the GAP created a community through shared experiences and accessible accommodations. It was overall such a fun and memorable day that I definitely won’t forget anytime soon!
