We started the day by going to Galway University Centre for Disability Law and Policy where we listened to presenters talk about international disability law reform. After this a couple of us went on a Scenic Cruise of Corrib River and Lake in Galway. This was so much fun and we were able to see a lot of Irelands culture. First, the boat crew did a representation of how to make their famous Irish Coffee. This boat has won an award in previous years for having the best Irish Coffee. They instructed us step by step and gave us tips on different types of ingredients to use. Then we were able to see the boat crew do Irish Step Dancing. They played the music, had their dancing shoes on and began. During all this, we were looking at different sites on the river like a Castle. There were loud speakers playing across the boat in which we heard about the history of these different sites. This was an amazing experience and I loved being exposed to Ireland culture and history. However, I did notice that this boat was not motor accessible specifically for people who have wheelchairs. On the website I noticed that it says wheelchair accessible, but in order to get onto the boat you have to go down a couple of stairs. This would entail that someone in a wheelchair would need to be lifted onto the boat. A person using a wheelchair would only be allowed on the bottom floor of the boat because you would need to use stairs to get to the second floor. These stairs were steep and it would be difficult for a wheelchair to be lifted up the stairs. Additionally I noticed that the doorways were tight and small, especially the bathroom doorways. This would be make it extremely difficult for a handicap person to use a bathroom because they wouldn’t be able to fit their chair in the door. Overall this boat is not accessible to everyone specifically wheelchair users. I had a great time on this boat excursion but it is frustrating to see that there is false advertising on their website.
