Mmmm….massachusetts Pears

sept-pics-008.JPG

Writing for a small paper, I have to take my own photos.  I have no training in photography, so I’m always happy if I get a decent one like this one today for a story on local produce in cafeteria lunches.  Of course, visuals are even more important on-line, so I’d like to improve my photography skills.

An update on this photo:  Here’s a boy with bright blonde hair, big blue eyes, in an orange shirt eating a green pear, and the editor put it on a black-and-white page, even though there’s plenty of color pages in the newspaper.  What can you do?

A Great Blog

I really enjoy and learn from Bill Simmons on ESPN.com.  He’s been blogging since 2001 and he does a great job bringing his own funny spin and insights to sports news.  This site has an outstanding  index (actually several), where you can look past blogs up not only by date or subject, but also browse through a “Bill Simmons” dictionary, where he defines key words and phrases he’s coined in the blog.  “Spork Flicks” are when chick flicks disguise themselves as sports movies, such as Jerry Maguire or Bull Durham.
