A Successful News Site
My friend, Jim Healy, the editor of The Statesboro Herald in Georgia, visited this weekend and told me about his paper’s very successful web site. He’s lucky that the paper’s owners have put an unusual amount of money into the site, even hiring a videographer. It’s doing great — attracting lots of hits and lots of ads.
Presidential “Speechalist”
When searching for political parodies for this week’s assignment, I rediscovered this one, starring Andy Dick as Bush’s “speechalist,” (speechwriter), the guy who wrote “fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, you can’t get fooled again” and other classic Bushisms. It’s simply great. See it on You Tube here.
The Google Scream
The L.A. Times had this story about how some people are annoyed with the ways Google chooses to customize its logo on special occasions. Or maybe they just wish they had $600 Google stock? This logo commemorates Edward Munch’s birthday. The other is for World Cup soccer. The article also has a cool link to a Google logo gallery. I love the super-clean Google logo. I also love it when they tweak it like this.
Fart Jokes
“When people are allowed to say whatever they want, sometimes they will just tell fart jokes.”
From Leonard Pitts’s column on Internet Message Boards in the Miami Herald.
Ms. Dewey Stinks
You’ve probably already seen this search engine, but it is new to me. It is incredibly annoying and slows down search. Does anybody really use this? Check it out: www.msdewey.com
A Great Blog
I really enjoy and learn from Bill Simmons on ESPN.com. He’s been blogging since 2001 and he does a great job bringing his own funny spin and insights to sports news. This site has an outstanding index (actually several), where you can look past blogs up not only by date or subject, but also browse through a “Bill Simmons” dictionary, where he defines key words and phrases he’s coined in the blog. “Spork Flicks” are when chick flicks disguise themselves as sports movies, such as Jerry Maguire or Bull Durham.

Momma?
Now everything makes me think of class. Another Times piece talked about how the paper’s obituary writer was duped by a photographer who claimed he took the famous photo of JFK Jr. saluting his father’s coffin. The article quoted the journalist’s maxim: “If your mother says she loves you, check it out.”
