What a Splash!

Were you able to make it to SAA’s Multicolor Mile? Well if not, let me tell you what you missed! On October 19th, SAA hosted their third annual Multicolor Mile on the Goodell Lawn. The event was a success with about 200 people signed up to participate in the one-mile color run. The event featured food, free Powerade, a photo booth, and blow-up activities such as basketball and bounce twister. We had many volunteers who helped out to make this event happen; thank you to everyone involved! We would also like to thank everyone who voted to dedicate $5 of their ticket towards their favorite cause on campus. There was an unbelievable three-way tie between Scholarships, the Center for Women and Community (CWC), and the Center for Counseling and Psychological Health (CCPH)! Ultimately, CCPH came out on top. Thanks again to our co-sponsor, T-Mobile, for helping to make this event happen. Keep an eye out for another big event by SAA next year on family weekend!

The Clock is Ticking…

It is crazy to think about just how close we are to the end of the semester!

With warm weather on the horizon, and many fun events being planned, I wanted to take a minute to acknowledge something super cool that just happened… our 2018-2019 SAA Leadership Team was elected! The president and vice presidents were elected, the cabinet positions were appointed, and everyone is so excited for all that the new leadership will accomplish in the coming year!
Being on the leadership team is not easy, so training began this past Wednesday. The leadership team met in Memorial Hall for an informational meeting to begin preparation for the transition from this year’s officials to next year’s. And while this meeting was very important and productive, the fun truly began after the meeting had concluded.

Piling into cars, the new leadership team headed to the Hampshire Mall to conquer an ESCAPE ROOM for this year’s Leadership Retreat! Our group was able to escape the room in only 50 minutes, with many of our members made big finds. Meg Brennan found the first clue, Heather Camacho, Elena Olson, and Jillian Smick decoded some key information, and Chris Craig kept up the team spirit with his cane and Sherlock Holmes hat. Not only was this event fun, it was challenging and forced participants to work together to reach an end goal. This skill will certainly come in handy as SAA is passed to next year’s team!

We want to thank All In Adventures for providing this amazing experience and anyone reading this should check it out if they get a chance to. We had an amazing time!

While it can be easy to start focusing on next year, we can’t “escape” from the rest of the semester! Stay tuned to see all of the fun things that SAA has planned for the upcoming final weeks… like our leadership team learned on Wednesday, there isn’t a second to waste!

As you begin to move on, consider “MOVING TO”!

With graduation rapidly approaching, we here at SAA have been trying our best to help seniors out!

We know that graduation can be stressful with all of the choices that have to be made and deciding where you will live can be amount the worst. This is why we want to highlight a series of free presentations hosted by the UMass Alumni Association: The “Moving To” Series.

Each presentation features a certain area, such as Boston, D.C, Pioneer Valley, and New York, and provides valuable information about what it is like to live there. Presenters are experienced professionals who can offer tips and tricks about things such as budgeting for new expenses, creating a new social circle, and finding affordable housing.
The Moving to Boston, D.C. and Pioneer Valley presentations were extremely successful and we are so thankful to everyone who came! We hope that you walked away with both newly acquired knowledge and peace about moving to new location.

We are excited to announce that there is one more “Moving to” event… “Moving To NYC”! If you are looking to head to the Big Apple after graduation or just want to learn more about what is like to live there, register here. Then, come to Memorial Hall on Tuesday, April 9th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.to meet Sarah Beth Hill ’10, founder of Perfect Strangers of NYC. The event is sure to be fun as well as informational.

Thank you to the Alumni Association for supporting the UMass students and providing great resources to aid us as move on to new adventures!

I asked our members…

Since joining Student Alumni Association last fall, I have found myself spending a lot of time reflecting on my experience with this amazing organization. Like all groups on campus, Student Alumni Association plays a role in shaping the overall “UMass experience” of it’s members. While I know how Student Alumni Association has shaped my UMass experience, I was curious how other members of our organization felt about SAA. So, I reached out to our members and here is what they had to say:

“SAA has opened up so many windows for me. I can’t even put into words how grateful I am! It’s so nice to be a member of an organization where there’s such a level of inclusion (no member fees, no major/GPA requirement). I’ve been able to meet such a diverse group of people that have become some of my best friends, while still being able to develop professional skills and network. It is really the best of both worlds to have close personal connections with members as well as alumni!”
-Megan Brennan ‘19

“SAA has given me a home at UMass. I’ve met some of my closest friends and I’ve been able to develop personally and professionally.”
-Colleen Madden ‘18

“SAA has given me more opportunities than I could have ever imagined and has allowed me to make new lifelong friends and connections.”
-Amelia Wright ‘20

“SAA has helped me grow as a leader, develop as a professional, and has introduced me to my best friends”
-Shannon Emmett ‘19

“SAA has made me a better public speaker, helped me improve my presentation skills, and provided me opportunities to develop meaningful relationships with alumni.”
-Chris Craig ‘19

“SAA introduced me to some of my best friends, as well as campus traditions that I hadn’t previously known about”
-Zachary Richardson ‘19

“SAA has helped me open up to trying new things. It has taught me that all experience is good experience and has made me a more well-rounded individual”
-Morgan Gray ’19

“SAA has allowed me to meet a lot of people that I may not have meet otherwise. It is also has provided me with so many new experiences and opportunities. I love SAA!”
-Brianna St. Don ‘19

While all UMass SAA members have a different experience, one thing is clear: SAA has benefited all of its members, providing them with new skills, opportunities and friends. I can say with confidence that for me, joining SAA was the best choice I have made since coming to UMass.

Before you take flight… JOIN THE FLOCK!

Hey seniors, have you ever wanted the chance to tell a UMass educator how much they impacted you? Or just wanted to thank them for being an amazing teacher, person, confidant, or advisor? Well, here is your chance!

This year, the senior campaign has a new twist – an amazing program called “GEESE”! While many of us UMass students and alumni are familiar with the hundreds of geese that call our campus pond home, the name of the campaign has a deeper meaning. “GEESE” is actually an acronym that stands for Gratitude for Educators Enhancing Student Experiences and that is exactly the goal of this new campaign!

So, what does all of this mean? Well, when seniors give a gift to the senior campaign, they get a chance to send a personalized thank you note to any staff member on campus and the Student Alumni Association will hand deliver the message to the recipient! This donation has the ability to both make a difference on our campus and make someone’s day!

Now that you know about “GEESE”, I am sure that you are thinking “WOW! How can I JOIN THE FLOCK?” and I am here to tell you that you have 3 options:

1. Come to Memorial Hall on any Friday in March or April between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to make your donation and write your note!
2. Visit the senior campaign website at this link, fill out a giving form, and we will create and deliver your thank you note for you!
3. Answer your Senior Campaign call and tell them you want to Join the Flock! The caller will write your note and we will deliver it.
Don’t miss this chance to leave your legacy at UMass Amherst! JOIN THE FLOCK!

Student Alumni Networking Night 2017

On Wednesday, November 8th, 2017 the Student Alumni Association hosted the Student and Alumni Networking Night. There were 90 students and 25 Alumni in attendance. This event allowed students to connect with alumni in order to gain career advice and answer industry-specific questions. The diverse alumni who attended this event attracted many students of various majors.

There were alumni from vastly different fields from Criminal Justice to Sports Management and everywhere in between. All of the Alumni in attendance were paired with a host who is a member of SAA. Chris Craig, the Ambassador Program Coordinator of SAA was the host of alumni, Martin Briggs who is a Research Hydrologist with the US Geological Survey. He said,

“I gathered invaluable information from Mr. Briggs. We had fantastic conversation about the field and he gave me a lot of useful advice regarding the transition from college into the professional world.”

We believe that student and alumni connections like this one are really special. Allowing our students to hosts Alumni helps to build one-on-one connections between students and alumni.

This event perfectly encompasses SAA’s mission to connect students and alumni to enhance the UMass experience and foster a spirit of giving back. The Student and Alumni Networking Night provides alumni the opportunity to donate their time back to UMASS in order to help current students. Students are given the opportunity to grow professionally by gaining valuable career advice, learning more about various industries and making connections with alumni.

If you are interested in attending events like this as an alumni or student, please contact the Student Alumni Association by emailing saa@umass.edu
