Founded in 1995, SMV is the longest-running student design team in UMass Amherst’s College of Engineering. The overall goal for the team is to construct a vehicle that can safely transport a driver with maximal fuel efficiency. To achieve this goal the team is broken into 5 sub-teams: Engine, Drive Train, Brakes, Telemetry, and Administration; each sub-team specializes in one area of the car. Over the past three years, SMV has grown exponentially from 4 members to over 40. Team members completed the design and development of a new car model to attend the Shell EcoMarathon in Indianapolis, Indiana, for the first time last spring! We are excited about the future and have ambitious goals for this year’s EcoMarathon competition. We will be returning to the Shell EcoMarathon competition this April with a fully functioning vehicle and ambitious goals to make a strong run on the track.
