We’re so happy and excited to welcome everyone to Amherst July 15-16 2023 to celebrate 50 years of the Department of Linguistics at UMass Amherst!
According to Barbara Partee’s history of the department’s first 25 years, its creation was approved by the Board of Trustees in December 1971, thanks to the leadership and vision of Don Freeman. The 1974 Linguistics Institute was hosted by our new department, which makes the 2023 Institute another 50th event (the Institute ends right before our celebration). Please come to Amherst for the chance to celebrate our history and our community with Barbara and Don and many, many other present and former faculty and students!
If you are coming, please register, and it would be nice if you could also leave a note on the Are you coming? page to let other (potential) attendees you’ll be here. If you can’t make it, please connect with us some other way, through leaving your regrets on our “Are you coming?” page, submitting to our 50th anniversary on-line publication, or joining us virtually for our Saturday evening open mic.
Questions? Please e-mail us at umassling50@umass.edu.
