Adam Charest Successfully Defends Thesis

This fall, Adam Charest defended and passed his thesis for the Commonwealth Honors College, completing the requirements to graduate with honors, Charest will be moving on to complete his Masters’ degree at UMass Amherst. His thesis has become the manuscript for Team Gram Neg and is currently under revision. This thesis and manuscript demonstrates the ability of the bacteriocin nisin to kill Gram Negative bacterial pathogens with a large sample size of almost 600 isolates. This challenges the hypothesis that nisin is only an effective antibiotic against Gram Positive pathogens, as it was previously thought the thick peptidoglycan layer in the cell wall of Gram Negative pathogens inhibited nisin’s activity. Congratulations to Adam for graduating with honors and beginning a paradigm shift!
