About the CURE

Diving into the world of research can be extremely daunting. This is especially true in the Riley Lab, where undergraduate students are challenged to be independent researchers and team leaders. As such, Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE), is essential to empowering students in lab. Since 2020, student researchers have started their time in the lab with this one semester integrative experience. The CURE was initially led by Dr. Riley, but in recent semesters has been led by senior lab members. In CURE, students learn essential research skills, including experimental design, wet lab protocols, literature extraction, and notebook upkeep. Moreover, students learn how to be good lab stewards by participating in prep protocols. In this time, students actively participate in lab meetings and shadow other lab members, becoming comfortable with the day-to-day experience of a Riley Lab researcher and engaging in the wider lab community. At the end of CURE, students will present to the lab about what they learned in the program, and choose a research team to join for their next semester (and maybe beyond!).
