About

The goal of Team Phylogeny is to infer evolutionary relationships and directions from phylogenetic analysis of bacteriocins. Currently we are working on a study comparing colicin-like bacteriocins (CLBs), which are a group of bacteriocins created by and targeting gram negative bacteria. To do this we align their protein sequences, create phylogenetic trees, and attempt to explain our observations based on information about their structures and functions. So far we’ve identified patterns of evolution in the nuclease CLBs, which kill target cells by destroying genetic material. We believe that understanding bacteriocin evolution is important to their potential use as novel therapeutics in the world of antibiotic resistance.
