Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Training
OSHA Training is construction safety training and reflects your knowledge of safe practices on construction sites. The training program is voluntary, and its “purpose is to promote workplace safety and health and to make workers more knowledgeable about workplace hazards and their rights. Outreach training does not fulfill the training requirements found in OSHA standards. Employers are responsible for providing additional training for their workers on specific hazards of their job as noted in many OSHA standards.” Visit here for more information and navigate to Program Overview.
Note: similar to LEED, terminology is important. Technically, it’s not OSHA “certification.” You are completing an OSHA Outreach Training Program course. Graduates of this program earn a 10-hour or 30-hour OSHA completion card.
OSHA-10 Training
Prerequisite: none
Completing the OSHA-10 training course reflects a basic knowledge and understanding of construction safety and health hazards, and some employers may require you to earn this certification before you begin working. This training is generally intended for entry level workers. There are two types of OSHA-10 training:
- OSHA-10 Construction: This training is appropriate for workers performing new construction, alterations, or repairs, or for those looking for a basic understanding of site hazards and safety precautions.
- OSHA-10 General Industry: For workers in any industry besides construction, agriculture, or maritime, they are considered a general industry worker and this training is recommended.
Either the construction or general industry certification is valuable to have, even if you don’t plan on going directly into construction.
