Hey multimediaites —

The quality of your work continues to improve. To lighten things up a bit, here’s a good example of what NOT to do.

Under-30 Participation

Posted by conv on 7th May 2008

This from Chris Cillizza today:

“Young Voters: No age group has been more ridiculed for their lack of
participation than those under 30. But in Indiana that age group comprised 16 percent of the overall vote while those 65 or older comprised 15 percent. Under 30s went for Obama 61 percent to 39 percent, a margin that all but neutralized Clinton’s 44 percent margin among older Hoosiers.”

Monday and Tuesday

Posted by conv on 27th April 2008

Ok, gang, coupla things —

If you need to pick up equipment for Tuesday’s Founder’s Day assignment, I’ll be in my office until around noon on Monday. I have a lunch meeting which may go long but I should be back around 3. I have a 9:30 class on Tuesday, and have a window where I’m in my office between 10:45 and 11:15.

Not connecting with me and getting equipment is not an excuse for missing Tuesday’s assignment, so find a way.

A couple of notes about assignments so far and what I’m looking for here on in:

* Teamwork. Every team member needs to pull their weight. Don’t stand on the standlines and let everyone else do the work — that approach doesn’t work in a newsroom and it doesn’t work in my class.

* Storyboard. Meet beforehand and figure out what your story is and the angles that everyone is pursuing. Try and cover as many angles as possible in case the story you thought would be the focus falls through.

* Fact-checking. Make sure you get your facts right. Some teams have had some great packages, only to be tripped up by getting the facts wrong. EDIT yourself and others on your team!

* Writing. Just because you are working on multimedia projects, doesn’t mean the writing gets second billing. Good writing always drives the package! Don’t get sloppy, focus on a strong narrative that makes the reader want to click on the other elements of the package!

* Shooting. Watch your lighting and your backgrounds. I’m still seeing a lot of shooting into the sun/light. When you start your shot, looking into your viewfinder and make sure what you’re shooting has the right lighting. Also, Founders Day is an event that will have a lot of action, expressions. Make sure you get up close and personal to get facial reactions.

*  Audio — audio clips are ok, but narration leading into the clip and ending it is really the way to go.

Questions?  Comments?  Concerns?

Let me know,

The Final Two Projects

Posted by conv on 24th April 2008

Hey gang —

Here are the teams for the final two projects:
TEAM1:
Jon
Daniella
Ryan

TEAM 2:
Tyler
Pam
Steve
Solmaaz

TEAM 3:
Brad
Chris
Kim

TEAM 4
Kerriann
Guy
Rich
Nick

And, once again, here are the details:

TEAM ASSIGNMENT #4: Feature story on Founders Day on Tuesday. Teams will put together features package that will include a written piece, a video piece and an audio clip or audio slideshow. (The two teams of four can do a second written piece.) Package can/should include material from the celebrations on Tuesday but can/should include other interviews — who might you interview to add to your package?

After today, teams should be operating on a dual track — focusing on Tuesday’s assignment and at the same time looking at what project you want to focus on for your construction feature, while lining up possible interviews for your package.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT: CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION. Pick a project to focus on and do a news feature. Deadline: Due by 11:15 on May 20 (finals week.) Team packages will include a written piece, a video piece and an audio clip or audio slideshow.

UPDATES

Posted by conv on 5th April 2008

Multimedia-ites —

I’ve updated the day-to-day schedule for the remainder of the semester — take a look and plan accordingly. Please note that your final package will be due the Tuesday of finals week, so you have a little extra time there. After each assignment is handed in, I’ve added an in-class review/critique of each package. Team members will be presenting and speaking about their packages in short presentations, followed by critiques from class members and your instructor.

Also, please start bringing your equipment to class each day — including next class!

Steve

P.S.:  I’m looking at your slideshows but I need emails outlining what each member of your team did — so please let me know!
