Scholarships

WINTER/SUMMER INTERNSHIP COSTS

If you are pursuing a winter or summer internship that requires that you register the experience for academic credit, you may be eligible for a scholarship to cover the cost of the internship credits. Once you have submitted the Handshake contract for your internship, please contact the program director (awoodman@umass.edu) to discuss this scholarship opportunity.

WORK-STUDY HOURS

The Developmental Disabilities and Human Services program has scholarship funds available to support work-study eligible students enrolled in the DDHS Program who are participating in unpaid internships for academic credit. Students must complete at least one DDHS course before applying for this scholarship opportunity.

Students can confirm their work-study eligibility through the Financial Aid office. Students can request to be paid for their unpaid internship hours by completing this form before they begin their internship. The program director will then complete a “request to hire form” with the Psychological and Brain Sciences Department. Once this is approved, students will receive an email from Laurie Dove or Jonathan Tominar-Lipari saying they may begin submitting hours. This process will need to be repeated each semester (if requesting funds across multiple semesters).

New hire

If you have never worked on campus, you will need to complete a New Hire packet. This packet should be brought to UMass Human Resources in room 325 of the Whitmore Administration Building. Please bring a form of photo identification (e.g., passport, license) with you.

Multiple jobs

Each work-study student is allotted a specific dollar amount per year. For example, if a student’s form says $3,000, this means that all employers combined can invoice the work-study office for $3,000 that year. If you are already working in a work-study position, you will need to check with your supervisor to see if you have any “funds” available for another employer before the DDHS program can compensate you for your unpaid internship hours. Funds would need to be “released” so that the DDHS program can hire you.

Pay rate

Students will be paid minimum wage for their hours (currently $15). At the start of the semester, you will be pre-approved to invoice a specific number of hours based on the number of credits you registered for. You will not automatically receive payment for these hours, you will need to submit weekly timesheets to request them.

  • 1 credit (40 hour internship) = $600
  • 2 credits (80 hour internship) = $1,200
  • 3 credits (120 hour internship) = $1,800

Work-study eligible students can request up to 120 hours across semesters and internships. No more than 120 hours will be approved, since this is the number of experience hours required by the DDHS program.

Submitting hours

Once you have received a confirmation email from Laurie Dove or Jonathan Tominar-Lipari, you are expected to email a summary of your hours each week by Thursday at noon to Jonathan Tominar-Lipari (jtominar@umass.edu). In your email, you should write “I worked XX hours this week”. Please copy DDHS on all emails (ddhs@umass.edu).

Summer internships

The work-study program runs fall through spring. To request work-study funds during the summer, additional steps are needed. Students should complete the relevant forms on the Financial Aid website. Once you receive notice this form has been approved, please forward the award letter to the program director (awoodman@psych.umass.edu).
