Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Today we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a leader of the Civil Rights Movement and first President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1963, Dr. King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference organized and carried out protests in Birmingham, Alabama, leading to Dr. King’s arrest. Importantly, while these protests were nonviolent, they were intended to be confrontational in nature. In responding to criticisms of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s approach, Dr. King penned the now famous Letter from Birmingham Jail.

Read or listen to Dr. King’s letter in its entirety.
Listen to the Supreme Court hearings about the case.
Reflect on the continued racial injustices that exist today and recommit to working for equity and civil rights.
