“Banjee”

Banjee is a word used to describe black or latin@ men who wear very masculine clothing and have masculine gender presentation–often showcasing their physique (tight muscle tees))–while also engaging in sexual encounters with men. They may or may not identify as gay. The term is closely associated to the gay vogue balls of the 70s and 80s, being most famously used in the film “Paris is Burning” about ball culture. In many ways, being banjee can be seen as a way to signify that one is not a “Queen”–however, it has grown to carry many more connotations that make it far from just an opposite.  In current popular uses of banjee it signifies a particular style that can be read as masculine in structure, however often the coloring, patterns, and material used when making the clothing, work to subvert the idea of masculine dress.
