Ballroom is term that describes the underground LGBTQ subculture (and community) that takes part in balls wherein different people walk the runway in order to win prizes in several categories. These categories are often associated with different genres of drag and people are often competing to ‘best’ pass as a member of a particular gender or sexuality. Those who compete in these balls are often a part of different houses which are led by usually one leader (per house). Some of the most famous houses are House of Xtravaganza and House of LaBeija, which were showcased in the 1990 film “Paris is Burning”.
