Internet Trolls and Online Harassment

Today in class we were talking about internet trolls, cyber bullying and how to deal with it all. Internet trolls are something I’ve actually been dealing with since this summer when I started my internship so all of this was very interesting and eye opening. This summer I started an internship with a popular sports blog called Barstool Sports. I definitely do not fit the typical mold of people who work there which I suspect is part of the reason I got a lot of hate. Some might look at this blog misogynistic, sexist, or offensive in every sense of the word but I didn’t see it that way. I saw it as just plain funny, everything that could be seen as offensive I could see the humor in. Anyways, I was a fan and applied for then received an internship there. I was told when you start working there you really become a “character” with an online personality and I had no idea what I was in store for. I was told you really need thick skin and to be prepared for the readers, “commenters” or internet trolls (whatever you want to call them) to say things about you, learn things about you and peek into your personal life. My online persona became known as “Intern Dana” and throughout the summer I gained 30K Twitter followers, 13K Instagram followers and everything else I kept for myself (Snapchat and Facebook). When I first got my internship people googled me and found out my measurements from my modeling profile online and judged me on that. That was just the beginning. Everything I did that summer was under a spotlight and a microscope. Some of the things that were found in the comment section ranged from being extremely sexually explicit to calling me an “illiterate c**t” and the same thing happened on Twitter. There were rumors spread about me and a coworker all over the internet which I still get tweets about. To be honest all summer I didn’t really care. I stopped reading the comment section quickly and didn’t pay attention to what they said to me. I didn’t feed the troll. I just figured the people behind the keyboards were perverted old men but hearing the story on This American Life really got me thinking. Part of me wants to know who these people are, do they have daughters? Nieces? Sisters? If I had confronted some of them what would have happened? But there’s also just a part of me that still doesn’t care. To me, this is what the internet is and what it has always been. I feel like if you agree to put yourself out there then you’re agreeing to be subjected to this. Yeah, I didn’t ask for it but I also somewhat agreed to it by putting myself on such a popular site. There is no “safe space” on the internet and there never will be or at least not for a long time. When I was in high school there was a site called “Formspring” where people would anonymously write mean things about people, start rumors and just downright harass them. In my opinion these type of people, this rhetoric, and this behavior will always be there. Do I think it’s right and that’s the way it should be? Absolutely not. I just don’t think  there is any way to get rid of it. If you’re going to be a girl working with all men at a sports blog in what is considered a “man’s subject area” then this is what’s going to happen. I think the same goes for girls playing video games. Right now, that’s considered more of a man’s activity (or I think) I don’t know a lot about video game culture so I don’t want to act like an expert. From what we’ve read it seems like that and  a lot like women in sports. From my experience it seems the same, we get more harassment, we get judged harder, and punished harder for our mistakes. I wish it would change but I don’t see it changing any time soon. Obviously the women in gaming and the women in sports are only helping.  But, I think there will always be a dark part of the internet filled with trolls and that’s just a condition of the internet.

Screencast Review: Why TV Is Not Dead

In class we did screen casts and I found one in particular about why television isn’t dead very intriguing. I thought this was a very interesting screen cast presented in class. For my main project in class I have been studying the future of TV, specifically dealing with Amazon and Netflix. So, my mindset since the beginning of the semester is that television is quickly fading out and essentially dead. Throughout their presentation they talked about different components that make TV still very much a part of our lives and why it will be for a long time. The first topic they approached was live sport broadcasts. Today cable packages and specific channels are dedicated to sports which dedicated sports fans will purchase. In the long run that will help keep cable companies in business.  While sports can be streamed online it is nearly impossible and die hard sports fans would never want to watch that way so they would be the ones to watch on television. The next topic is news but for older generations specifically. These are also the same people that are keeping newspapers in business. With the rise in technology and a plethora of different ways to get our news, television has become one of the original news sources alongside newspapers. I can go on twitter, Facebook or the computer to find my news instantly but older generations will sit down and watch the six o’clock news to find out what is going on with the day. I am in the younger generation so I was completely blind to this because I never get my news from TV which reinforced my belief that TV was dying. There are also several interactive elements to TV now that tie in the new technology.  Twitter is one social media platform that brings in television shows; it’s called “live tweeting”. People will tweet about things happening in the show while they watch the show and use certain hashtags . Other people live tweeting will be able to see those hashtags and interact with other people on Twitter watching the same show. Shonda Rhimes has several shows that she writes such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder. All of these shows air on Thursday nights so there is a hashtag for it called TGIT (thank goodness it’s Thursday).  While watching these shows people will tweet their reactions or comments they have during the show using that hashtag. The point is that if you aren’t watching live and you go on Twitter you will have spoilers so it will prompt you to watch live.  I know this from experience, I watch Greys Anatomy every week and if I don’t watch live I have to avoid Twitter. This is something I didn’t take into consideration while thinking about television diminishing. One of the last topics they discussed was advertisements. Advertising companies will help keep television and cable alive for a little while. Even if people aren’t watching live and they go on OnDemand (which is a feature of Comcast cable) they are forced to watch advertisements which can only help cable and television in the long run. All of these things do have their counter arguments that could be made saying television is still on the out but these are still very strong arguments. Whether television is here to say or on the outs is a big debate and only time will tell.

Key Term: Elasticity of Demand

elasticity of demand

Elasticity of Demand is how responsive consumers are to changes in prices. Elastic prices are very sensitive. Some things can easily be replaced if their prices increase. But if the price of gas increases people are stuck. In the article Age of Platform, elasticity is described as having to do with a company’s monopolistic power especially in the short term. When a company is more powerful it is easier for them to survive when prices increase rather than smaller companies.

What Youtube means to me/ My top 15 playlist

I don’t use YouTube as much as most people do. Most people have a YouTube app on their phones or tablets but I don’t. I never felt that I used it frequently enough to download the app. I used to go on frequently to watch video blogs by Jenna Marbles who got her fame from YouTube. I used to watch them a few years ago but I quickly lost interest in following her blogs because I could never remember to watch them. That’s most of the reason why I don’t follow specific YouTube series’; it isn’t because I don’t enjoy them it’s mostly because I can never remember to watch them. If I ever go on YouTube it is to listen to songs that I don’t have in my iTunes library or if I am listening to Pandora to listen to a specific song.  Sometimes I’ll go on and watch viral videos but I usually end up there from another site. I don’t go to YouTube with the intent of watching viral videos. Although, whenever I do go on YouTube I end up on there for a long time. I fall down the “YouTube rabbit hole” as I like to call it. I’ll start listening to a song or watching a video and then before I know it its two hours later and I can’t even remember what I watched or how I got to whatever bizarre video I end up at.  I really enjoy funny videos on YouTube like Jimmy Kimmel’s mean tweet videos, clips from the Ellen show, and carpool karaoke. I actually just made a YouTube account to be able to upload videos for where I work not to watch videos. I also just found out about YouTube Red, I am slowly learning about what it consists of. Through this class I want to explore deeper into YouTube, I would like to learn about its advantages and disadvantages.

My roommate on the other hand loves YouTube, she subscribes to many different channels; mostly makeup videos and makeup tutorials. She follows the makeup artists closely on YouTube but not just on YouTube she follows them on different social media as well. She follows them on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. Her being able to follow them on different social media platform helps her keep up with when they put out new videos.  She will also watch YouTube videos for hours at a time, just by going on the sidebar and seeing similar videos. Once she discovers a new makeup artist she will binge on their makeup tutorials. These YouTubers have become so much a part of her life that she talks about them as if she knows them. She also has formed new friendships by bonding with people over watching the makeup tutorials. She won’t seek out new friends that watch YouTube videos but sometimes it comes up in conversation and then they will form a friendship from that. They’ll talk about different makeup artists, whether they like the same people or not, who else to follow and other stuff.
