America’s newest full-time vocal ensemble sings with one of the freshest and most engaging sounds in choral music today. From art songs to folk songs, from Smokey Robinson to Richard Strauss, Cantus’ brilliant sound, innovative programming and heart-felt singing have garnered the highest praise from critics and audiences alike. The singers–solo quality all–produce a wonderfully warm, gutsy and masculine sounds as well as a kind of smooth delivery, overtly emotionality, and uncanny sense of ensemble. They have a peerless gusto–a sense of boundless joy in music making. “Cantus’ sonic blend was so beaming and elastic that it seemed to originate as a single, gorgeous variegated voice.” The Washington Post

This was my first experience with Cantu and they were amazing. Incredible vocals, harmonies, musical diversity and musicianship along with the ability to connect to the audience.
I was pleased to be able to buy a couple of their CDs and enjoyed one of them all the way home.
I have not heard Chanticleer, but I can’t imagine anything better than what I heard last night.
They were fantastic. My lady friend did not show much enthusiasm when I mentioned the upcoming performance to her, but after it was over she was ecstatic (sp?) and was so glad we had gone and listened to their music and antics. What more can I say other than note that they provided superior sounds and intonations for a wide variety of music.
I recently moved here from Minneapolis-St. Paul and have heard Cantus live a number of times. I think that last night’s program was right up there among their best. They keep improving and honing their amazing sense of ensemble. The music and their presentation were both excellent, and the singers seemed to truly enjoy what they were doing. I was very moved by several of their pieces. It was exciting to see them on the program this season, and I hope they are invited back frequently
Cantus was absolutely fabulous! I surely hope you bring them back soon. It was one of the best concerts we’ve every attended at the Fine Arts Center Series.
I first heard Cantus on American Public Radio some years ago as Idrove from Connecticut to Pennsylvania at Christmas time. I was bowled over by their sound and made my first stop in PA at Borders, where I bought two of their CDs. I’ve been waiting to hear them in person ever since and drove three hours last evening to have that experience. When they first walked on stage, I was a little disappointed–they’re nine rather ordinary looking men, tall, short, fat, skinny, etc. Not the tuxedo-clad sophisticates that Chanticleer represents. But when they opened their mouths to sing, I was once more awed by their incredible voices–individually and as a chorale–by the wonderful, exceptionally interesting music they choose to sing, and by their personalities. They almost feel like a bunch of guys from the neighborhood who got together to sing–but what an extraordinary neighborhood that is! They made me laugh, and cry, and wonder–just how do they do that? They’re great. ring them back as often as you can.
The best $15 that I have ever spent in my life.
you know after seeing yo-yo ma w/silk raod sunday in boston i thought it might be a bit much all in one week, but cantus was superb, they were awesome. thank you bowker my fav place.
I thoroughly enjoyed Cantus, the variety, the quality, the antics and the beauty of the blended voices. They are truly interested in growing love of music, you can tell by their joy in what they do! I look forward to following them as they become more well known. I hope this will be the first of many visits the Bowker Hall and the New England area. Bravo!
At the beginning of the performance they announced that this was the show that they always performed, at least on this tour. Given this, I was so impressed with the freshness and intensity of each song. Their connectedness to eachother was palpable, as was their joy in the creation of their collective sound. What a pleasure and thank you for bringing them to the University!
