Science, politics, and the election

Our readings for next week are up on Perusall. It is a combination of four editorials recently published by major science journals: the New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Nature, and Scientific American. They are endorsements for president – which the NEJM and Scientific American have never done, and Nature and Science do rarely.

There is a difference of course between Scientific American, which is more ‘newsy’ than the other three – which are peer reviewed academic journals. But they’re all making clear and specific political calls. So read and comment for preparation.

We’ll discuss the intersection of science and politics to start, and move onto some choose your own adventure breakout room activities for most of the class.
