What’s required (and hidden) in the graduate curriculum?

This week in the D/I/P seminar we will discuss the role of graduate curriculum in diversity, inclusion and pedagogy. We have two readings:

The Gerholm paper just passed 31 (years old), but provides an interesting social science analysis of what is often called the ‘hidden curriculum’. For Monday’s discussion we will explore the tacit knowledge of our discipline and programs and the ways that graduate curriculum might make this knowledge explicit and create more equitable experiences.  The figure at this link might inspire some ideas.

  • What things did you learn in graduate school that you wish had been taught earlier?
  • What should be taught in a required curriculum for graduate students?
  • Should the DIP seminar be required for all graduate students in ECo and Geosciences?

The National Association of Geoscience Teachers hosted a webinar on March 30th about the hidden curriculum of graduate school in geosciences.  The recording and resources are available here.
