Patricia Gubitosi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics at the University of Buenos Aires. She received her Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Houston in 2006, with a dissertation entitled La expresión de la pasividad en el discurso hispano en California y Nuevo México, 1855-1950, where she examines the use of Spanish passive voice as an issoglose for the different Spanish dialects of the US Southwest.
