In the Inclusive Research on Language Processes (IRL) Lab, our goal is to learn about the language processes that support real-life communication for people with aphasia and other neurological conditions that affect their language.

How do we do inclusive research on language processes?

  • We study language processes in diverse speakers and listeners
  • We look beyond “core” language processes to how attitudes (emotions and knowledge/beliefs) affect communication
  • We study real-life interactions to promote inclusion for people with aphasia and other neurological conditions
  • We study the teaching and learning of language science in order to promote inclusion in our classrooms and in the fields of speech-language pathology and language science

Our lab is directed by Jennifer Mack, PhD, and is part of the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Our lab was formerly called the Neuroscience of Language and Aphasia Lab.
