The Roles of Phonotactics and Frequency in the Learning of Alternations

Jarosz, Gaja. 2011. The Roles of Phonotactics and Frequency in the Learning of Alternations. In Proceedings of the 35th Annual Meeting of the Boston University Conference on Language Development.

Abstract

This paper shows that a probabilistic, generative model of phonological learning  predicts a delay in the learning of voicing alternations as observed for Dutch-learning children. The model is provided with input data representative of the Dutch voicing distribution and derives its predictions from the input frequency and the interactions between the gradual learning of phonotactics and phonological alternations.
