Revitalization and Documentation

I am presenting at the International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC) 6 in Hawai’i on Documenting Semantic Distinctions in Highly Endangered Languages. This work examines the difficulties of documenting semantic topics such as tense and modality in highly endangered language contexts. In case studies with three Muskogean languages, I discuss the challenge of using current elicitation and documentation tools in these contexts and detail several variations on the tasks designed to overcome those challenges. I illustrate successful semantic documentation in Maskoke (Creek), Koasati, and Chickasaw and discuss how the implications this has for revitalization efforts.
