Our Values and Principles

Our values and principles

We recognize: it is a great privilege to partner with our participating families, youth, children, schools and community partners to work towards our scientific, educational and community engagement goals.

We acknowledge and take seriously: our responsibility to make our research, teaching, and engagement work meaningful and accessible for our community partners and the broader public.

We believe: that all that we do is better with a diverse team and with diverse community partners, families, and youth.

We honor and celebrate: each of our lab member’s and research/teaching/outreach program member’s differences in identities, attributes and experiences that make us who we are.

We pledge: to carry out our science, teaching and community engagement work with complete integrity, great care, and deep investment in our scientific, learning and relationship processes.

We uphold: the right that each one of us has to contribute to science, learning and engagement, and to achieve professional and personal growth in an environment that is both supportive and affirmative.

This means we will:

Treat each other with respect, dignity, and kindness.

Strive to maintain an environment in which each person can thrive, bring their whole self to their role, and fully participate.

Value the uniqueness of various lived experiences and invite each other to be heard as we work towards our common goals in science, teaching and learning, and engagement and outreach.

Recognize oppression as individual, institutional, and systemic challenges that must be addressed and that require striving for solutions at each level. Although this is complex, our individual acts every day are important contributors to this goal.

Commit to listening, learning, and advocating for those who experience injustice or oppression. This requires ongoing, active choices to engage in self-awareness and self-reflection, while not centering our work in ourselves but instead striving to turn our continuous learning into action to fight injustice and oppression.

Acknowledge our mistakes and welcome corrections, as part of a continuous and lifelong learning process.?

Strive for equity, justice, and accountability to uphold these principles.

Acknowledgement: We are grateful to the PINE Lab for their permission to adapt their statement. The modifications we made were to more fully encompass the range of activities in our lab.
