Abstract

Being the first person in your family to go to college is a difficult task; however, although you might feel like you do not understand your surroundings, you come in with strengths of your own. In this panel, we will discuss what it means to be a first generation student in the field of linguistics, what are the hidden norms and expectations that define success in higher education, and what is the cultural capital that we bring with us and that although it is not understood we can use as our strength. We will discuss experiences, what we learned at different stages of our academic career (undergraduate, graduate, professor), ways to strive and people to network with.
