Course Description

This course is intended for people who have taken an introduction to formal semantics. The main topic to be covered is how we use natural language to talk about circumstances/times/individuals other than those in which we are when we talk about them. We will discuss the different challenges as well as different approaches to them.

Instructor: Yael Sharvit

Yael Sharvit is a Professor of Linguistics at UCLA. She received her PhD from Rutgers in 1997. Sharvit’s research is in formal semantics and the syntax-semantics interface. Her work deals with Negative Polarity Items and Interrogativity, among many other topics.
