Extension/Outreach in the Adler Lab

As part of the USDA Sunflower Research Grant, Lynn hired extension educator Hannah Whitehead to conduct public outreach about bees. Her work includes:

  • Developing and maintaining a “pollinator resources” section on the CAFE website
  • Hosting workshops on bee health and biology, including “Honey Bees under the Microscope” and “Fight the Mite!”
  • Speaking at bee club meetings
  • Creating fact sheets
  • Coordinating Massachusetts data collection for the annual USDA pest and disease survey
  • Conducting practical beekeeper-driven research, including the 2018 MA Hobbyist Honey Bee Health Survey, and upcoming research on queen rearing
  • Writing a quarterly article for the Mass Bee newsletter (“the Research Buzz”) which summarizes the latest honey bee research

Lynn Adler also has a CAFE position as a Research-Extension Liaison and speaks annually at many outreach events, including the BeeFest in Greenfield and the Grower’s Twilight Meeting at South Deerfield.

In addition, several members of the Adler lab participate in the campus entomology club – the Fernald Club – which hosts outreach events for kids and adults about insects. Alison Fowler (PhD candidate in the Adler lab) is club president.
