The Basics
My first post is to go over some essentials to pet ownership and should be covered before you consider bringing a pet into your off campus life.
First, make sure your pet is up to date on all vaccines required by the State of Massachusetts. These may differ from your home state, but the information on Massachusetts is here. If you have a dog, note that Amherst town by-laws require you to register your dog. This has to be renewed every year and can be done at Amherst Town Hall. The fee is $5 for a neutered or spayed dog. (Town of Amherst Dog Licensing) When you get to Amherst with your pet, schedule regular veterinary check-ups with a local veterinarian to keep your pet healthy. Also, be aware that Massachusetts is a lyme disease epidemic area and you should take preventative measures to make sure your pet is guarded against fleas, ticks and heartworm. These products can also be purchased from your local veterinarian.
In the town of Amherst and surrounding areas, most landlords require that your pet is spayed or neutered. I personally recommend completing this process before you come to school so you can have more time with your pet as they heal from surgery, but there are plenty of local veterinarians who provide safe spay/neuter surgeries in the area.
A tip that I have learned in my years at UMass is that landlords will be impressed (or in some cases require) that you present them with a letter of recommendation for your pet from either a former landlord, neighbor or roommate. Anyone who can attest to the model behavior of your pet and your impeccable qualities as an owner is a good choice. Recommendations from groomers, veterinarians, dog-walkers and trainers can be highly beneficial in the renting process as well.
For dog owners, some landlords require a certificate showing your pet completed basic pet obedience or a pet manners class. I highly recommend a basic pet obedience class for anyone getting a dog. It helps you become a better trainer and work with your dog to show them the behaviors that you want them to have. Definitely look for trainers that use “positive reinforcement” or “reward-based training” when you are looking for a training class. This means you will use treats or toys to reward your dog for doing the right thing and makes training super fun for your dog!
My final tip is to look over your renter’s insurance policy very closely f you have a pet. Some policies will cover potential damages and liabilities caused by pets, but not all. Sometimes separate liability insurance may be required to insure you against pet-related damages.
During the week I will be compiling a list of pet-related services in the area including emergency vet locations, veterinarians, groomers, pet supply stores and much more!
(Also, every week there will be an, unrelated, goofy picture of my dog. I hope he brightens your day!)
