Cadence

The purpose of the Cadence study is to investigate the relationship between cadence and intensity across the adult lifespan. Current public health recommendations for preventing and treating chronic disease include guidelines pertaining to intensity which can be difficult to understand and apply (e.g., % heart rate, % maximal capacity). There remains a need for a common and intuitively understandable metric of intensity that can be easily implemented by the general population and translated across objective measuring devices, including consumer wearable devices

Cadence (steps/min) has been shown to strongly correlate with metabolic equivalents (METs), an indicator of absolute intensity. Walking cadence is therefore a simple yet scientifically valid metric of intensity. In this study, our primary aim is to identify objectively observed and manually counted cadence criterion cut points associated with markers of increasing intensity across age groupings.
