Two people looking at each other connected by a tree trunk with the words idea exchange written on the trunk and roots going into each head.Learning is an inherently social process – we learn by observing others, communicating with people, reading books, and interacting with others. Using technology (e.g., social media) to expand your PLN can amplify your opportunities for learning – that is, you can connect and learn with more knowledgeable others from around the world. By expanding your PLN, you can have the necessary resources at your fingertips to grow your practice as an educator.

Think of learning with a PLN like crowdsourcing information, because technically, that’s what a PLN is all about! Crowdsourcing is like when there is an emergency on an airplane and someone shouts out: “IS THERE A DOCTOR?” There is always bound to be someone in the crowd who can help out. Although less pressing than an emergency on an airplane, in the classroom there are questions teachers grapple with that the collective others can help address.

Crowdsourcing ideas and learning from more knowledgeable others are just two reasons why it’s beneficial to expand your connections with others in your PLN. Now we want to hear from you – Why do you think it’s important to connect and learn with others in your PLN?
