“Your UMass Blog” WordPress Documentation

So, I had some serious formatting issues Friday afternoon. Here it is though, in all of it’s glory.
I chose to omit a “table of contents” page as I wanted this documentation to be a quick, friendly read helping the instructor familiarize themselves with their own Blog without getting bogged down by too much content.

Module Workshop

I received some helpful feedback for my Indesign module layout.

  • My heirarchy is ambiguous because it is so boxy. I could remove some of the grid-style and replace it with some other shapes (or effectively used white space).
  • The pastel blue does not provide much contrast, I could use colors a bit more effectively. Also, my greens could work to provide a better feel for the page.
  • I don’t need a grid line rule along the y axis of my page. It looks incomplete and disconnected from the rest of the page.
  • My sub heading could be more effectively centered or underlined. It looks a bit floatey right now.

Technology Autobiography

It’s hard to tell a story without your hands.

Trying to encapsulate a 3 minute spoken word issue of a story made me realize just how good Garrison Kieler is. My biggest problem was encapsulating such a large issue into 3 minutes while keeping it relevant, vivid and amusing. I tried to capture telling quotes and sounds but felt myself coming up short–if only I could be more descriptive. Being more descriptive, though, meant more words which meant more time.

The challenge with voice recording is making your words sound different (or better) than those of the guy next to you. Why should people listen to you instead of him? (I guess that’s the challenge for any writer) Or perhaps what’s more important is making your words sound more meaningful, like they carry more weight.

I always loved listening to baseball on the radio because the announcer seemed to really care about bringing you the game. Being there was a privilege, but they were going to give you the next best thing.

Indesign: Layers

Paragraph styles are pretty easy to use. I spent some time trying to orient them in my master template using layers but I’m not sure that it actually worked.

I created layers for each section (heading, intro, steps, etc) in my master and then tried to set paragraph styles within each one. It may have worked? It seemed like the paragraph styles were following with the layers.
