Anti-harassment Policy

The organizers of SCiL and the Workshop on Formal Language Theory in Linguistics are dedicated to providing a harassment-free workshop experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form.

Following the Linguistic Society of America, we define sexual harassment as follows. Sexual harassment consists of unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when:

  • submission to such conduct is explicitly or implicitly made a term or condition of a person’s favorable interview report;
  • submission to or rejection of such conduct by a person is used as the basis for making favorable or unfavorable decisions affecting the person; or
  • such conduct has the purpose of creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.

Sexual harassment can occur between individuals of the same or opposite sex. In addition to the behavior described above, sexual harassment may include, but is not limited to:

  • lewd comments about an individual’s sex, sexuality, sexual characteristics, or sexual behavior;
  • offensive sexually-oriented jokes or innuendos;
  • sexually suggestive comments or obscene gestures;
  • leering, pinching, or touching of a sexual nature;
  • non-gender or non-sex-based harassment of individuals protected under federal civil rights laws, as set forth in organizational policies or codes of conduct, statutes, regulations, or executive orders.

Enforcement

If a participant engages in harassing behaviour, the workshop organizers retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender or expulsion from the conference.

Reporting

If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible. You can make a personal report by sending an email to FLTWorkshopOrganizers@gmail.com. You won’t be asked to confront anyone and we won’t tell anyone who you are. You can also make an anonymous report by filling out this form. We can’t follow up an anonymous report with you directly, but we will fully investigate it and take whatever action is necessary to prevent a recurrence.

This anti-harassment policy is based on the example policy from the Geek Feminism wiki, created by the Ada Initiative and other volunteers.
