RadAfricana: The Twin Mandate of Africana Studies

Robert Young and I taught together at the University of Alabama in the African American Studies Program there. His tenure home was in the English Department and I was in the American Studies Department, but we were subversives and insurgents for the building of Africana Studies at the Capstone. He was shaped by his undergraduate experiences in Africana Studies at Hamilton College and graduate work at Syracuse University. My undergrad days were at the University of Texas and my graduate work at the University of Houston where I had my first formal teaching experience in an African American Studies program. We came from different campuses and time frames in the struggle, but in Tuscaloosa, along the Black Warrior River, we forged a comradeship around a common idea of the role of Africana Studies.
