My Avocation and My Vocation

We have been thinking about finding “good work” or a calling that both provides income as well as a challenge to keep you excited about your work.  This reminded me of a bit from a poem by Robert Frost called Two Tramps at Mud Time.

Here are the lines from the poem….

My object in living is to unite
My avocation and my vocation
As my two eyes make one in sight.
Only where love and need are one,
And the work is play for mortal stakes,
Is the deed ever really done
For Heaven and the future’s sakes.

I like the idea of uniting my avocation (that which I love) with my vocation (that which I do).  Here is the full poem if you are interested…

Welcome to class

This page was created for use by students in STOCKSCH 382 – Professional Development in Sustainable Food and Farming.  This is a career development class in which we learn and practice communications skills that are useful in the workplace such as: 1) letter to an editor, 2) press release, 3) resume and cover letter, 4) grant writing, and 5) more.

Much of our work in class is to help you think creatively about your “calling”…. that is what are you here in this lifetime to do with your energy and gifts?

To help you think creatively about your future calling…

please take a look at this video on the future of work…

Which, if any, of the major trends presented in the video do you believe might be relevant in your own future work?
