Kent’s DesignBuild Trip — Stop 4: University of Kansas: Studio 804

Studio 804 design/build at University of Kansas has done some pretty amazing projects over the years including educational facilities on the KU campus. Here are a few favorites using materials left from the manufacturing of other products.
The Center for Design Research uses stone tailings for the exterior facade and the inner Trombe Wall, while the living wall adds a beautiful element to interior.

The Hill Engineering and Development Center features a remarkable woven rainscreen using salvage aluminum.

The shop facilities at KU D/B are quite impressive and feature among other things- wood, metal, glass and prefabricated wall panel production areas, along with research and development projects and a striking glass enclosed design center.

Students are starting a new home build at Studio 804 that will feature an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to help provide rental income for the new owners. Director, Dan Rockhill is instructing students on the placement of under slab electrical conduit as they prepare for the concrete pour.

In keeping with the emphasis of using repurposed materials, salvaged crushed concrete is used under the slab.
