UMass INFORMS Speaker Series – Dr. Muge Capan

We are thrilled to announce the first talk of our Fall 2024 Speaker Series, “Improving Diagnostic Equity in Ambulatory Settings: Research to Practice,” organized by the UMass Amherst Student Chapter of INFORMS and its Faculty Advisor, Professor Anna Nagurney.

Dr. Muge Capan is an Assistant Professor at the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at UMass Amherst. Dr. Capan graduated from North Carolina State University with a PhD degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering with a minor in Operations Research. Prior to joining UMass Amherst, she served as the Associate Director of Health Systems Optimization at Christiana Care Health System, leading cross-disciplinary teams as a PI and Co-PI on federally funded projects by NSF and NIH focused on developing and implementing data-driven solutions to facilitate timely diagnosis, personalized treatment, and communication of clinical risk. Her research utilizes decision analysis, operations research, and machine learning to analyze and inform clinical decision making under uncertainty. Her passion lies in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and developing new methods and applications of health decision analysis by leveraging data and human insights, with an emphasis on better understanding health disparities.

Boyer Lecture by Professor Chandra Bhat

In collaboration with the UMass Transportation Center and its Director, Professor Mike Knodler, we are delighted to announce that Professor Chandra Bhat will be speaking on April 5 at 2:30 PM in the Campus Center as part of the Boyer Lecture Series.

Professor Bhat was a faculty member at UMass in transportation before joining UT Austin. He currently serves as the Editor of Transportation Research Part B and has an h-index of over 100, with over 40,000 citations.

The topic of Professor Bhat’s Boyer Lecture will be of great interest to many of us. We look forward to seeing many of our members there.

UMass INFORMS Speaker Series – Dr. Ayse Selin Kocaman

We are glad to announce the third talk of our Spring 2024 Speaker Series titled: “Optimization-Based Solutions for the Design and Operations of Sustainable Electric Power Systems,” organized by the UMass Amherst Student Chapter of INFORMS and its Faculty Advisor, Professor Anna Nagurney, and the Energy Transition Institute at UMass Amherst.

Dr. Ayse Selin Kocaman, an Associate Professor in the Industrial Engineering Department at Bilkent University and a Visiting Scholar at the MIT Energy Initiative, will give the talk. Dr. Kocaman will focus on recent research advancements in the development of optimization-based solutions for the design and operations of sustainable electric power systems.

Scientists in the Crosshairs: Impacts of War, Crisis, and Conflict on Ukrainian Science, Dr. Ina Ganguli

Dear UMass INFORMS Community Members and Friends:

We are thrilled to announce the second talk of our Spring 2024 Speaker Series titled, “Scientists in the Crosshairs: Impacts of War, Crisis, and Conflict on Ukrainian Science,” organized by the UMass Amherst Student Chapter of INFORMS and its Faculty Advisor, Professor Anna Nagurney.

Dr. Ina Ganguli, Professor of Economics in the Economics and Management Departments at UMass Amherst, will give the talk. Dr. Ganguli will highlight key channels through which wars and crises have been shown to impact science. Her research highlights potentially effective ways to mitigate the impacts of war on science and ways to aid reconstruction.

Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) – A University in Wartime

Please join us on Monday, February 12, 2024, at 4:00 PM, in ISOM Room 111, as we welcome Dr. Tymofiy Mylovanov, the President of the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) in Ukraine. Dr. Mylovanov will speak about his experiences leading KSE during wartime in Ukraine. You will also have the opportunity to learn about higher education in Ukraine and the partnership between KSE and UMass Amherst. Dr. Mylovanov is a frequent guest on CNN, BBC, and other news and media platforms.

We thank the International Programs Office and its Director and Vice Provost for Global Affairs Kalpen Trivedi, the Isenberg School of Management, the Operations and Information Management Department, and other administrators at UMass Amherst for supporting this event.
