Common Questions

How involved do I have to be?

Your level of involvement in Alpha Lambda Delta is completely up to you! You may simply just be a member, you may participate in chapter events and community service projects, or you can serve in a campus or national leadership position. Members who meet the “Active membership” requirements will be eligible for a gift of ALD honor cords at graduation.

What are “Active Membership” requirements?

The Umass ALD chapter has requirements to be considered an “active member” of the society. These requirements allow the ALD executive board to track students who have been active members in the organization throughout their time at Umass. Members who complete all active membership requirements from point of induction are eligible to receive the free honor cord gift at the time of their graduation. Active membership requirements serve to track who is eligible for free honor cords at graduation, however, members can be as involved as they want to be with ALD and these requirements are not contingent on your membership in the organization.

As of fall 2019 Active Members of ALD:

  • Attend at least 1 ALD general body meeting or event per semester
  • Earn 5 hours of community service per semester. (Can be with ALD or on your own)

What type of events does ALD take part in?

The UMass Amherst chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta takes part in community service projects, leadership and networking opportunities, professional development workshops, and membership activities.

How long does my membership last?

Once you become a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, you are a member for life.

How can I gain leadership experience or get more involved?

If you are seeking leadership experience from ALD, one option is to run for an Executive board leadership position. Elections take place at the end of the spring semester and there are many positions to run for. If you would also like to help plan an event we have on our agenda, we would be happy to meet with you to discuss details and aid in your endeavor.

I didn’t have a 3.55+ GPA as a freshmen, but now my cumulative GPA is over 3.55, can I still join?

Unfortunately, ALD is an honor society to recognize excellence among freshmen in their first year. We only induct members based on their GPA freshmen year. But, congratulations on a successful academic career!

I think there may have been a mistake because I meet the qualifications but was not invited to join.

If you have read over the qualifications and feel that you should have been invited, please contact any of the officers or email ald@umass.edu. In the past, there have been students who were not contacted initially, and we offered them membership once they brought it to our attention.

How do I become an officer in ALD?

Officers will be elected at the end of second semester, after the year’s induction ceremony has past. We feel that this will allow students to distinguish themselves through participation on committees and at events, giving the current officers more evidence of potential beyond a resume and interview when selecting the new officers.
