Crystal Bardsley has about 10 animals she keeps as pets, two of which are sugar gliders. These animals are marsupials that resemble flying squirrels. Bardsley got her first sugar glider, Ana, about a year and a half ago.

“It is really fun to watch them fly around the house and glide down the curtains when they’re playing,” Bardsley said. “They love to nestle in pockets or sweaters, and their favorite spot to hide is right inside or underneath my hood.”

The sugar gliders also like to run around in a big wheel, similar to a hamster wheel, Bardsley said.

Ana is about 1 ½ years old, and is brown-colored, while Bardsley’s other sugar glider Moana is 8 months old and white-colored.

Bardsley said her sugar gliders like to make “yip yip” noises, which she said is not a sound you would expect out of a small animal.

Ana and Moana will eat their food right out of Bardsley’s hands, and Bardsley said when they eat it looks similar to how a squirrel looks eating a nut.

“Their favorite food is fresh blueberries,” Bardsley said.
