1.3 Why is it Important?

3D printing and modeling opens up a new world of learning for students. Imagine being able to take an idea in your head and turn it into a real world object within minutes or hours. 3D printing projects help students become “Innovative Designers” and “Creative Communicators” (see the ISTE Standards for Students). Students who participate in 3D printing projects develop a number of different skills (Trust & Maloy, 2017), including:

  • 3D Modeling – Prepares students for the future, because 3D printers are being used in many large industries including health, fashion, and even food design.
  • Creativity – 3D printing projects encourage innovative design skills and creative thinking for figuring out how to develop printable 3D models.
  • Problem Solving – Students can solve real world problems with 3D models. And, students must learn how to problem solve 3D printing challenges (e.g., failed 3D prints).
  • Technology Literacy – Students can develop their technology literacy skills by learning how to use, and troubleshoot, a 3D printer.
  • Self-directed Learning – Since 3D printers are captivating new tools, students often take it upon themselves to learn how to create 3D models and troubleshoot any 3D printer problems. 
  • Critical Thinking – Designing a 3D model requires a deeper understanding and critical reflection of the content.
  • Perseverance – Given that a number of problems can arise during 3D modeling and printing, students must be able to persevere through challenges in order to generate a 3D printed physical model.
