2.3 Exercise: Whistle Assembly

This activity will give you hands-on experience in piecing together your own digital 3D model of a whistle.

Step #1: Visit tinkercad.com. Sign up via email or Sign in using social providers: Facebook, Google Yahoo, or Microsoft account.

Step #2: Visit Whistle Assembly on Tinkercad and select “Tinker This.”

Step #3: The workplane already supplies all of the necessary 3D shapes to assemble a whistle. You can move around the 3D space by holding down the right-click button of your mouse and moving the mouse around.

Step #4: Drag the orange cylinder to the orange circular lid. Make sure the two shapes align.

Step #5: Drag the blue sphere to the orange cylinder. Click the black up-arrow to move the sphere up (Z-axis).

Step #6: Move the second orange circular lid on top. Click on the black up-arrow to move the orange circular lid up (Z-axis) to close the container.

Step #7: Highlight the cylinder by clicking empty space next to the cylinder and drawing an imaginary box around the cylinder. Let go, click the cylinder, and move it next to the red mouthpiece. Highlight the all of the shapes and click the Group button on the top-right on the toolbar (Group button: Square+Circle combined)

Congratulations! You’ve just made your 3D model of a whistle!


Since Tinkercad is cloud-based, all your progress gets automatically saved. To download your 3D model for 3D printing, you may export your project in a .stl or .obj file format by clicking on ‘Export’ on the top-right. 3D printers have 3D slicing software, which opens .stl and .obj files to print.
