Benefits of Youtube

(This was a draft so I’m not sure which week it’s from…)

In class, we spoke about Youtube in comparison to Spotify and other music playing apps. I feel as though Youtube is much better than most people think. A few points that were brought up was the lack of playlists on Youtube and the fact that you can’t listen to Youtube when your phone locks.

Playlists can be made very easily with Youtube. All you need to do is get the link of the specific video you want and input in into your started playlist. You need an account to do this but all you need to make an account is to have an existing Google account (which we all have because we go to Umass). To counter the music stopping during phone locks, just set your phone to not lock during the time you’re listening and you won’t have to pay any kind of monthly subscription.

We also discussed whether or not Youtube users in the class subscribed to channels. With Youtube, the payment Youtubers receive is based on how many views and subscribers they have. I for one am guilty of not subscribing to everyone that I’m interested in and subscribing more to people who put new content out weekly rather than if I like one video of theirs. This could also be helpful for the ratings since if a bunch of people liked entire channels based on one video, results of popularity would be very skewed.

Youtube Red was also brought up in discussion. We seem to have decided that what it offers isn’t worth paying a monthly subscription. As mentioned above, other music sites have a much better monthly package when compared to Youtube Red. However, since in my opinion there isn’t anything wrong with the free content on Youtube, I’ll definitely be sticking with them for a while.
