About Trolls

Reflection on “this american life” about Lindy and her troll.

So after listening to this I felt many different things actually. First, I was surprised to hear Lindy say she was going to “feed the troll” by retaliating and second, I was impressed that the troll actually took the time to apologize and offer all of his personal information to her.

These things surprised me because honestly, I find trolls to be pushovers. Like, they only can act so tough because they’re online and anonymous. For her to speak out about the troll, at least the way she did it, didn’t seem like feeding them to me. From my experience with trolls, they try to word vomit their logic on you but I think it pisses them off more to notice them lightly. I feel like there’s a right and wrong way to respond to a troll as I have done both before haha. Of course, the ones I’ve dealt with hadn’t done anything so drastic to me but I suppose this is good advice anyway?

The wrong way, is to argue with them about it since most of it’s just coming from their butts and makes no sense. And if you argue long enough, they’ll begin changing what they say to make more sense and when you call them out on it they get pissed off.

The right way, in my opinion, is to just brush them off. They’ll give you a “too long, didn’t read” kind of thing about how you’re a liar and they’re right but if you let them know that their crap was “so long that you didn’t read it”, you just put them in the red and now their all butt hurt. Of course, they’ll come at you with something along the lines of “well you didn’t read it because you’re to incapable…” of something, but you can just ignore that bit and let them wallow in butt hurt by themselves.

I find myself pretty fortunate that I haven’t come into contact with too many trolls personally even though I feel like I’m online more often than a student with final papers due should be. Sometimes I think the more you put yourself out there, the more likely it’ll be that a troll will find you. Having a blog for example will probably attract a lot of trolls but for me, someone who just reads forum posts and blogs but doesn’t actually respond to anything too often wouldn’t get a lot of trolly feedback.

The sad truth of it is, I don’t post about things even if I want to in fear that some troll will make a scene about it. It’s something I feel like I should get over some day but honestly, why do I need to put my opinions all over the internet? The same as why other people have to give their opinion on my opinion on the internet? It just doesn’t seem worth it sometimes.

And here’s a thing where a thing happened 😀

Female Characters in Video Games

Digital reflection on the Video Game presentation.

According to the data presented in the video game groups project, female characters are scarce in video games. Honestly I was a bit shocked by the statistics provided as I know many games (even very old Dreamcast, 64, psx games) that have female leads. Now, many games have you creating your own character so you can be female if you want. Perhaps they were looking solely at American games rather than Japanese ones?

Another issue was race and the lack of non-white characters. Well *points to the brown main character in my featured image I feel as though most games try to be relevant. Granted it may be racists, I really can’t imagine having a white female main in a game like Grand Theft Auto, can you? It’s the same way I couldn’t imagine anyone but white males in adventure or war games (American made ones anyway). It’s also important to note that in JRPG’s, most characters are white because white is seen as beautiful in Asian countries. You can see it in manga as well. How many Japanese manga characters actually look Japanese? They, according to the anime and manga class I took, try to make their characters look as white as possible; big eyes, western clothes, light hair, etc. As we exotify Asian culture and romanticize it all, they do the same to French and American culture.

There is nothing Asian about these blonde haired, blue eyed women and it’s so popular in Japan that is has been adapted into Takarazuka Revue musicals (all female Japanese Broadway pretty much).

Back to the topic of games, Tomb Raider was one of my very first video games with human characters for Playstation (another being Dino Crisis, a game with a female lead so again, not sure where the data came from). I’m sure we all know Tomb Raider as the games are still coming out for new consoles and there have been a few movie adaptations. Obviously Lara is a female and for the most part is the only character in this game. A few other games to note are Perfect Dark for the 64, Parasite Eve for psx, Resident Evil for Dreamcast (movies also have a female lead), and the Atelier series running from GBC to PS4, most have female leads with male side-characters.

Another important series to note are the “Tales of” games. Granted the main character is male, you can control any member of the party and have that character be displayed instead. Specifically to Tales of Legendia, each character has a character story after the main story where they are the main character for about a few hours each. Honestly, I kind of hate the main character in most of the Tales games so I’ve never once beaten the game while in control of the main character but I wasn’t playing as a female even with the option to, I don’t judge games like that. As a female gamer and I don’t mean to offend other female gamers or whatever, I just want to play as the hottest dude. It was brought up that females want to play as females but I find them very annoying…it could just be crappy american voice acting (or general annoying af Japanese female voices) but I would rather put most female characters so far behind me that all anyone sees is the bad ass hot dude character I chose to play as. Sometimes you have to go into a boss fight solo, just too much work to keep reviving your party NPC’s. I played the entire game as the character on the far right in the video.

Might also be good to note the main character isn’t even in this party… Same with me though, he’s not that good ^^”

Holograms in new media

Digital reflection for Jan. 27th

Way back when we just began thinking about new media, I mentioned Vocaloid hologram concerts. This took us into a discussion about the movie “Pixel Perfect” and how not that long ago, no one was thinking that a hologram singer could be possible but it did make for a nice fantastical movie.

Now, Japan has been hosting holographic live concerts since 2009. Vocaloid originated as a computer program where people can write songs and have it sung by the computer. Each character has there own personalities, voice actor/actress, and style which gave it the perfect opportunity to evolve into something like hologram concerts.

If I were to say anything on whether or not I think this is “good” new media, I definitely think this is a step in the right direction. This is a pretty interesting thing to have created but it’s heavily fan based so unless you’re interested in Vocaloid itself, you probably wouldn’t be interested in hologram concerts starring robotic sounding rainbow haired Japanese girls. But even so, I’m glad to see some “physical” new media.

There’s still much that can be done to enhance this method of performance. As we go into the future, our capabilities in media will inevitably increase to a point where a better hologram system will be possible and perhaps even become a wide-spread thing. I am looking forward to holographic concerts in America but hopefully they’re just as good as the ones in Japan. I feel as though we as a country have been falling behind in the technology department so I’m excited to see the progress we’ll be making to catch up.

Screaming Eagles – Podcast Terms

Podcast (podcasts3)- “a bridge between internet radio and traditional wireless radio”. “An extention or radio”. “A mid-term technology”. The future of radio is still evolving.

Medium (podcasts2)- “scholars have argued that radio is a deeply intimate medium”. “Listening often imparts a sense of emotion stronger than that imparted by looking.”
Both radio and podcasting have concepts in common despite their differences. For example, radio and podcasts use the idea of listening rather than seeing to convey their message. Also, both radio shows and certain podcasts have become available as downloads for easier access.

Serial (podcasts3)- “Serial is something of a gateway drug, leading many of us to other podcast”. “It offers good insight to the future of podcasting”. Serial is popular enough to encourage newcomers to begin listening to podcasts but it has also been credited with showing more potential than others.

Benefits of Youtube

(This was a draft so I’m not sure which week it’s from…)

In class, we spoke about Youtube in comparison to Spotify and other music playing apps. I feel as though Youtube is much better than most people think. A few points that were brought up was the lack of playlists on Youtube and the fact that you can’t listen to Youtube when your phone locks.

Playlists can be made very easily with Youtube. All you need to do is get the link of the specific video you want and input in into your started playlist. You need an account to do this but all you need to make an account is to have an existing Google account (which we all have because we go to Umass). To counter the music stopping during phone locks, just set your phone to not lock during the time you’re listening and you won’t have to pay any kind of monthly subscription.

We also discussed whether or not Youtube users in the class subscribed to channels. With Youtube, the payment Youtubers receive is based on how many views and subscribers they have. I for one am guilty of not subscribing to everyone that I’m interested in and subscribing more to people who put new content out weekly rather than if I like one video of theirs. This could also be helpful for the ratings since if a bunch of people liked entire channels based on one video, results of popularity would be very skewed.

Youtube Red was also brought up in discussion. We seem to have decided that what it offers isn’t worth paying a monthly subscription. As mentioned above, other music sites have a much better monthly package when compared to Youtube Red. However, since in my opinion there isn’t anything wrong with the free content on Youtube, I’ll definitely be sticking with them for a while.

Kiana – What Youtube means to me

Okay so I’m just going to start off by saying I probably am on Youtube way more than I should be as a college student. I feel as though my current life revolves around parodies, homework, and pet videos. Here’s a little breakdown of what I have on my playlist and why I’m so into it 😀

  1. Game Theories: I like to listen to all the math involved in the analysis of the games I play. I am not smart enough to math and game at the same time so it’s pretty interesting to hear how unrealistic the games I play actually are, as well as why certain things in games wouldn’t make any sense.
  2. Dog Fails: Who doesn’t love seeing a bunch of dogs try really hard :)? In a cute way. Reminds me of my dogs, the only word they know is “kitty food”. Favorite is at 1:50.
  3. Those who like dog fails will also like people fails. I found this video last winter and I’m sure everyone felt a little bit like they were going to bust their ass. Favorite is at 3:45
  4. I have 2 cats and they’ve done most of these things before. Scratching the mirror, chilling in the bucket of dog food, putting their heads in boxes, etc. I miss my cats… Favorite is at 1:32
  5. Dogs doing a dog thing.
  6. I like to watch properly synced AMV’s with hot anime dudes. It happens.
  7. ^Also like to listen to real hot people sing in Japanese.
  8. Anime openings: I love them, they’re great. I’ve been introduced to a bunch of great artists via anime openings. I also tend to watch anime only if I think the opening is good.
  9. Abridged Series: Sometimes anime is just too long and no one feels like watching 200+ episodes of anything. Cut the anime into a bite sized piece with a sarcastic parody that also covers the gist of what’s actually happening.
  10. This is a parody of the above video. Why not?
  11. Another parody of the Yugioh Abridged parody. Sung in the voices of the characters from the series. I think this version of “Bad Romance” is better than the original.
  12. Fake movie trailer. I’d watch the movie but I still have no desire to play any kind of football game.
  13. R. Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet” but better.
  14. Let’s plays. I like to watch speedruns of games I’ve beaten but when I get too lazy to play a game myself because 1. It’s too expensive or 2. I know I’d fail super hard at it, I like to watch other people do it. Markiplier is great and RoosterTeeth isn’t really a Let’s Play but you can watch him fail super hard and swear at his console.

I think I’m a bit special when it comes to Youtube. Not sure how many other people watch these kinds of things but I’m hoping my playlist has opened up a few people to the endless possibilities of awesome. Please creep on my playlist and enjoy some of the weirder things on the internet.
